Al-Mutanabbi wrote these words to honour Sayf al-Dawla’s courage at Al-Hadath—affirming that great achievements are born of equally great resolve.

وَتَأتي عَلى قَدرِ الكِرامِ المَكارِمُ
He continues by honouring Sayf al-Dawla’s nobility—affirming that the greatest acts of generosity come from those of the greatest character.
Written by Al-Mutanabbi in the tenth century, the verse remains one of poetry’s most enduring expressions of ambition. One half faces the world on the dial; the other rests against the wrist on the case back.
